This presentation delves into the anatomical changes that occur after a tracheostomy and total laryngectomy. Given these patients face distinct communication and pulmonary hygiene challenges, careful SLP assessment and intervention is crucial to facilitate communication, support respiratory function, and improve quality of life. This session will highlight how SLPs can play a pivotal role in enhancing communication and managing the airway. This presentation will focus on appropriate selection and application of various speaking valves and Heat and Moisture Exchangers (HMEs) in addressing post-operative communication and airway management in tracheostomy and total laryngectomy patients. With a wide array of HMEs such as the TrachPhone and speaking valves including the Passy Muir Valve and the DualCare Speaking Valve, it can be challenging to know which one is the best fit for each individual patient. This session aims to clarify the function of each valve and guide clinicians in making informed choices, ensuring optimal care and support for our patients.
