School-Age Stuttering Therapy: A Practical Approach

Speaker:  J. Scott Yaruss, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-F, F-ASHA, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA

This workshop will provide practical strategies for helping school-age children and
adolescents who stutter. The presentation will describe strategies for comprehensive
evaluation and include video examples of treatment activities designed to help
children improve fluency, reduce negative reactions to stuttering, educate others, and
communicate effectively across speaking situations. Participants will be able to 1) design
efficient, effective, and comprehensive diagnostic evaluations of school-age children
and adolescents who stutter, 2) select and implement several appropriate treatment
strategies for helping school-age children and adolescents who stutter, and 3) describe
several ways to effectively involve families, teachers, and others in the treatment plan.
Intermediate information level.

 

This workshop will be offered for .7 ASHA CEUs.

J Scott Yaruss is a Professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at the Michigan
State University. Dr. Yaruss frequently presents continuing education workshops to help
speech-language pathologists feel more confident in their ability to help preschool and
school-age children, adolescents, and adults who stutter. He has authored or coauthored
than 130 papers, articles, chapters, or booklets on stuttering. He is also co-author of the
Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering (OASES), as well as Schoolage
Stuttering Therapy: A Practical Guide, Early Childhood Stuttering Therapy: A Practical
Guide, and Minimizing Bullying in Children Who Stutter: A Practical Guide for SLPs, and
other guides published by Stuttering Therapy Resources, Inc.
