UNC Hospitals Pediatric Feeding & Swallowing Disorders course

UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC will be hosting a 2 day course on Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders: A Medical, Motor, Behavioral Approach. The course will be Aug. 8 - 9, 2008. This course will review oral-motor and swallowing techniques, respiration, GI issues, nutrition, motor/postural alignment, and behavioral strategies. This course focuses on how to approach pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders; how to diagnose and prioritize treatment options ensuring successful outcomes for you and your patients. Evaluation and Treatment of Fluency Disorders in Adults and Children

This day-long course will include a survey of the current theories regarding the causes of stuttering; a tutorial on how to differentiate between normal disfluencies and stuttering-type disfluencies; and a description of the process of differentially diagnosing between stuttering, cluttering, and normal disfluencies in children and adults. Hands-on practice for identifying types of disfluencies, coding, and interpreting will be scheduled. A significant portion of time will be devoted to therapy techniques with additional hands-on practice.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the difference between fluency, disfluency, and stuttering.
Identify the core and secondary behaviors associated with developmental stuttering.
Describe the major etiological theories of stuttering.
Identify assessment and intervention protocols commonly used with children who stutter and their families.
Compare and contrast stuttering vs. cluttering.
List characteristics of developmental stuttering (i.e., affective, behavioral, and cognitive) as manifested by adults.
Summarize the essential features of stuttering assessment protocols for adults.
Identify intervention protocols commonly used to treat adults who stutter.
List features that distinguish developmental stuttering from stuttering associated with acquired neurologic conditions
